HOW GAMING CAN MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE?

From researching into more about the variations in gaming, I have decided to base this particular project on two different formats of gaming which are: ARG (Alternate Reality Games) and MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games).

First of all, I watched a particularly interesting video by Jane McGonigal, who is an American game designer and author, from this video she addressed the topics of both ARG and MMORPG, in particular ARG. Jane shows such passion and enthusiasm when talking about gaming in general, stating that games can make a world better. According to her research, globally we don't in fact play enough hours playing games.

To further this, the worlds biggest and most successful MMORPG is World of Warcraft, you as a player can choose any race and any character, and as Jane refers to it as 'there are lots and lots of characters who are willing to trust you with world-saving mission'. Giving us that sense of escape from reality, even if it's only for a short time we are transferred into a world of our own, where we can set aside our daily lives for guaranteed enjoyment. Being able to play with millions of other players to achieve that epic win, this game is all about positivity, levelling up, completing quests, making your character the best you can, it is all about that sense of achievement that we don't necessarily achieve as straight forward in real life.

Of course I'm not naive enough to think that I can make a game as big and successful as World of Warcraft, but I would like to consider Blizzards approach as they did create such a successful game.

Perplex city is a popular ARG that was released in the early 2000's by Mind city, however, Perplex city was initially released as a board game they launched a number of trading cards, this is where the ARG concept ties in as the most sense of enjoyment for a player was through real life.

Players could of course buy the board game and trading cards, the story of Perplex city is also told through blogs and other various forms of media. This was a way for players to further their enjoyment through the game, connecting through the internet with other players who enjoy the game. The winner of this game would be awarded £100,000, this award was collected by a player in the UK in 2007 who found the Receda Cube in real life.

I initially discovered this game when researching popular ARG, for my own project I know myself recreating a game of this stature is not possible, I would not wish to do so anyway as for my narrative I do not wish to create a card game. However, it has gave me the concept of possibly, if i wish, to approach my narrative in different formats.
