AARON SNEDDON INTERVIEW

Aaron Sneddon is a family member who is from the town of Banbridge, he is a software engineer who works for an international company called Vela, he lives in Belfast as his place of work is in Belfast. Always from a young age he was very computer minded and knew that for a career it would be in the media or IT industry.

Aaron has been working for Vela for the past two years and his main role in work is fixing issues for clients from various companies. For example a recent issue he was assigned to fix a piece of coding for a client, with one part of over 3000 lines of coding broken, he had to go through all the coding to fix the broken piece.

In the past year Aaron has really developed his skills in HTML, CSS and Javascript. He has even recommended me a book that he found really helpful when learning how to effectively use Javascript and in the upcoming future he is going to help me improve my skills in web design.

Vela is a recognised company worldwide and has recently won an award for its overall high performance Direct Memory Access (DMA) platform, from the Fund Technology and WSL awards.

The Questions (answered through email)

What work do you find really inspires the work that you make?

"What motivates me (inspires me) is my love of solving problems and making things which programming allows, they're like wee puzzles you solve for a living. Also when you find something you're good it its motivating in and of itself, So knowing you can do something, and do it well is motivation in and of itself"

What do you think is the most important or favourite project that you have worked on and why was it important to you?

"Project that I loved was making a tower defence game in uni, Was called dwarf defence and I worked on it super hard and way into the night and the teacher is using it as an example still to this day Important because I loved the tech used (it was an android) and there was a sense of teamwork involved. We were all in it together and on the same team and it was great I learned a lot from it"

What traits do you think makes a good IT artist?

"Someone who is really good at breaking down a problem, planning ahead, and someone who has an initiative. There is nothing worse in IT when someone says "I just cant do that" someone who is good asks themselves "how would I do that" "how do other people do that" "how can I make this easier to do" and has a bit of creativity in their approach. So ill list that out: Break down problems Plan your approach to a problem/design well A sense of independence/creativity/initiative."

"All thats more problem solving/programming stuff but thats all I know about basically. If it were more script writing and design work I guess studying people who have done stuff before like classic film makers, study a good piece of media design, good examples of everything that you're trying to be good at."

"When I was learning guitar a bit I was always told that you have to know the rules before you break them and I think that would be true of any kind of creative media type thing. Like study the theory behind what you're trying to do, find out how you would emulate and copy them first, then put your own spin on it second."

"Like some of the best bands start off covering other peoples songs then go off and do their own thing kinda away."

What do you think is the best bit of your job, and what don't you like about you do?

"Best bit about a job: when I finally fully understand a bit of code and then can be a bit creative in my approach, also designing something new and getting to build something well and with good practice."

"Worst part: long hours, no physical movement in the job, most people should work at mentally taxing jobs a lot less because after a few hours you're burned out and the whole office just sits on facebook"

"So you need to really get up and move and socialise a lot to stay sane but it is the dullest place to work sometimes and its draining. You also cant go home and sit on the computer after a whole day at a pc, you need to get some exercise, and thats another hour or two of your day gone which circles back to the long hours being a problem, you have a lot less free time generally. And you're tired all the time because you're just sitting about."

What would your ideal role be in the IT industry, or are you happy with role you already have?

"Definitely could be in a better position, i'd ideally like a startup culture of a really engaged team with passionate people who are working with new technologies and in an engaging area that is breaking new ground. So say some kind of AI work, working in a field where we feel like we're making something new and useful, something which hasn't been designed before and solving new problems and using new tech."
